Design & Build

Building homes that we design allows Hillview Building Company to utilize the extensive building knowledge of our design staff to balance creativity and practicality. Most of our building projects are large renovations or new construction close to our Richmond, Vermont office. Our end goal is to create a high quality, durable home that you’ll be proud of for many years to come.

The Hillview Building Company Process

Most of our building projects begin as design projects. This gives you the opportunity to get to know the same people you’ll be dealing with as your project carries through to the construction stages. We’re proud of the relationships we develop with our clients as their projects are realized. Often the same person that has worked on your design will be working with you through the building process as well.

You don’t need to make the decision whether or not to build with us when you come through our door. Our building company is intentionally sized to keep a close knit-group of carpenters and maintain year-round employment. We try to keep our building projects close to our office in Richmond, so that’s further limiting to what projects we might tackle. In our role as architects and designers we work with a lot of other great builders and can recommend some in your area when the time comes if you’d like.

One of the reasons we created the building side of our company was because many of our design clients were wanting to take the next step toward green building. We wanted to use our combined construction experience and skills as architects to increase the thermal envelope of the homes we build in cost effective ways. We use different construction approaches depending on the specific project but we’re also willing to try new ideas as technology and practices evolve. The end result is a durable, comfortable home that’ll serve you well for many years to come.

If you’ve chosen to use the building side of the company from the beginning we can take a look at where your construction costs may be headed at intervals during the design process. The level of detail will be dependent on the scope of the project and where in the design process the project is. Early in the project we can offer rough square foot prices and as the project evolves the costs will get more refined and accurate. At the end of the Design Development phase we’ll have enough information to create a detailed line item construction cost estimate or quote. We price building projects a couple different ways, estimates for time and materials projects or quotes for fixed price projects. The type of project and number of potential variables dictate which approach makes the most sense for each case.
